Philco 48-1201 Radio/Phono Spiffy!

Post by gbfrank » Sat May 26, 2012 6:32 pm

Picked up this spiffy Philco radio/phono table-top combo at a garage sale this
morning. The phono is a single-play, auto-eject. Radio is AM. It lights up and hums
on both radio and phono modes BUT, the platter does not move, the needle looks
like a bent finishing nail, and there is no hint of a radio signal. Still, it's very soothing
to listen to the hum and stare at the light. :)

The Philco link I've included is a great site for some great vintage equipment.
=====================================================

Model 48-1201

The model 48-1201 "Bing Crosby Special" was the 1948 version of the extremely popular 1946-47 model 46-1201. 5 tubes, AM only.

Most 1948 models have a round brass medallion in place of the PHILCO decal as shown at left; the medallion is embossed with the PHILCO trademark.

Original selling price: $69.95

Number made: 30,463

Yepper, needs some tlc. The original finish has has removed and is ready for some new color and varnish. The speaker fabric
is original and I think it may still have a useful life, if stretched correctly. As to the scarey electrical parts, I have a friend
who collects and repairs radios. I may just call in a favor and ask him to make it all work.

At the pace I move, you might see it in a year, or two, or... I hate to rush things. But I really like the looks of this
and may actually move faster than my normal plod into the future. I still have two or three of those neat 1950s portable
45 players that have been lurking in the basement for years now. sigh, it's always manana. :(

  • Please don't get me wrong, it wasn't my intention to push you. I'm just curious about the results of the restoration.

I didn't think you were pushing, B_big. I know it's just an interest in a nice old hunk of music playing.

Nice find GB! There's just something about vintage stuff like that!
Anyone who thinks he has a foolproof plan hasn't counted on the ingenuity of fools.
