What is your favorite format?

Post by Fantomas No More » Fri May 16, 2003 9:23 pm

Well?
Ain't got no woman next to me,
I just got this magazine,
And what's on the TV screen,
But that's okay with me,

  • Oh well! I have a personal list of favorites, in order of appearance:
    • 1. 10-inch albums
      2. 7-inch E.P.s
      3. 12-inch albums
      4. 7-inch singles
    No 78s, I can't play 'em!

I stick to 33 1/3 LPs mostly. I have a fair amount of singles (both 7" and 12", varying sizes of EPs too) but I've always been an album kind of person because I like the hidden gems that sometimes never got radio play or much recognition, so even if I only know a band for one song, I still like to listen to the whole album. I also like covers, find LPs easier to store (despite the difference in size), and on average, they are simply in better condition (most people just kept their singles in a big, friction-happy stack.

    • Firstly, Welcome to the 'Guild' my "friend"! We appreciate each new member who's seriously interested in (vinyl-) records.

Regarding you statement about 45's; how about all these marvellous 7-inch 45 only releases?! . Image
Gosh! You don't know what you're missing.

45s are my preferred format because 99.99% of the great recordings from the rock and roll era are only on 45

78s for me!! There's just something about them that excites me more than any other format. I love the fact that they are so brittle and have even survived at all but mainly it's the sound and history that I can't get enough of!!

When I play "discs" I mostly play 12" LP albums. 12" maxi singles has mostly better sound quality. 12" half mastered LP albums eg. from MFSL are really good. But mostly I stream FLAC files from my computer via a Benchmark DAC1 (digital analog converter) to my Onkyo A-809 and Dali Concept 10.
I prefer vinyl converted to FLAC in 24 bit 96 kHz or 24 bit 192 kHz. I do NOT play MP3.

  • Isn't your nickname 'Vinyl Collector'? So, if you already have the vinyl recording and you must have the equipment, to play them, at least once, for transferring, why the hell do you do this?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to offend you, but I ask myself, what is the reason to make such an effort. On the other hand you can easily put on a record on your turntable and enjoy the music. . Image
    • By the way, here are my fave vinyl formats in order of appearance: 10", double 7", 12" recordings. . Image
