Norton's 'Pretty Things'

Post by B_big. » Sat Aug 21, 2010 12:36 pm

  • I have completet a series of buys from 'Norton Records' reissues. Their catalog contains some excellent 12-inch reissues from:
    • 'The Pretty Things'

      LP:
      • 'The Pretty Things' (Norton - ED-282 mono, 2000)
'Get the Picture?' (Norton - ED-283 mono, 2000)
'Midnight to Six' (Norton - ED-284 mono, 2000)
All of these LP's have a gate-fold cover with at least the original front cover design of the original releases. I can compare with the first album only, 'cause this is the only LP, that I own an original release, on Dutch 'Fontana' (687 341 TL mono, 1965), and this on has a completely different back cover. But it is exactly the same 'track-listing', in contrast to the 'Sundazed' reissue (LP 5223, 2007). The song on their release have been electronically reprocessed to 'stereo', and the majority of the songs are different in contrast to the original. Therefore I can hardly talk of a reissue in this case, it's more like a compilation. They used just the photograph of the original and added a wide bar, containing their logo, the title and the songs.

    • E.P.
      • 'Rosalyn' (Norton - EP-501 mono, 1999)
        'Big City' (Norton - EP-502 mono, 1999)
'Buzz the Jerk' (Norton - EP-503 mono, 1999)
'Midnight to Six' (Norton - EP-504 mono, 1999)
'A House In the Country' (Norton - EP-505 mono, 1999)
In case of the E.P.'s I can't compare to one of the original releases, I haven't come across a single original release until today! But in consideration to the 'Norton' album reissues, they presumably have at least the original front cover design.

All of these 'Norton Records' mono releases can convince, with their powerful, clean and clear sound. Additionally they manage to impress with their affectionate continuation of detailed cover and label design. Norton managed to adapt even the design of the original 'Fontana' company logo, just a different color and the 'Norton' lettering has been changed.

Their efforts at large make these reissues well worth for serious collectors and lovers of the music of the 'Pretty's'

4th continuation: Norton's Pretty Things

  • The E.P.'s:
    • 'A House In the Country' (Norton - EP-505 mono, 1999)
    Adjustment:

The LP labels displayed above: the 'Norton Records' label image is taken form the second 'Pretty Things' LP ('Get the Picture?'), but the design is identical to the first reissue, apart from a different track-listing and catalog number!
I'm sorry, but I was too lazy to make an extra scan.

Thanks for this info B big,

I saw this band live in 1965 and loved it. I had the first two records back then but don't know what happened to them.
Now I can order new ones, thanks.

  • It's good to hear, even two years after I've posted these information, that they're of use to somebody! I hope they're still available at Norton's! I keep my fingers crossed for you.
