Atco late 1960's mono discography

Post by Ernie11 » Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:55 am

Atco was a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. The Atlantic group was unique in that it issued U.S. promo mono LP's for up to 5 years after mono ended commercially in 1968. As a result, there are a wide variety of artists who recorded for Atlantic/Atco for which you can find one of these scarce promo mono's. These promo mono's were almost always put into stereo covers, with a round red or gold "d/j monaural" sticker on the front cover.

Mono's can generally be identified by: the lack of the word "Stereo" on the label; the record number prefix begins with "33-" instead of "SD 33-" for stereo's; the biggest giveaway is the aforementioned round red or gold "d/j monaural" sticker for promo's, or the word "Mono" on the lower front cover for commercial copies.

...and here's a scan of a promo copy. My scanner can't quite get the color of the round monaural sticker right. In this case, it is gold, while most were red stickers.

And another one. Finding Atco mono's as late as 1973 is tough.
