Post by LP1469 » Tue Sep 20, 2005 1:12 am

Does anyone out there know of an online discography of EP releases on Chess? Google finds plenty of LP and 45 singles discog's - but no EP listings. Thanks!

Valdez, thanks for the link. That's one of my favourite sites. Unfortunately though, they only have LP discographies. It's the EP (extended play) discography that I am looking for.

I've found references to a few Chess EPs here and there but from what I've seen there just weren't many released here in the states. None of the guides have any US listings for the regular Chess artists however every once in a while you may find a reference to a Juke box EP.

If you're talking about UK releases... Pye released several both under the Pye R&B series and later under the Chess label starting in 1965. These all have the Pye Records Ltd. copyright. Near as I can tell few of these had made it to the US but they seem to show up in Canada more frequently.

I've found a few Chess issues on the Pye R&B series with cat#s in the 4400s. The Chess EP series started at CRE 6000 and I've found releases up to the 6020s.

I should ad that there were five Chuck Berry and one Bo Didley EP issued in 1958. These were numbered in a 5100 series. It seems Chess seemed to abandon the EP in favor of lps early on. They must be pretty rare as the values with Pic sleeves are big $$$.

ks45 & scotapell - thanks a lot for the info. Much appreciated!

scot - it is just the USA EPs I'm trying to find out about. The UK EPs on London, Pye International and Chess itself are pretty well documented in the Record Collector book.
