The Premiers US 45 Discography

Post by rooster » Sat Dec 16, 2017 4:32 am

As there were many groups of "Premiers" over the years, I would like to point out that this group of Premiers were based in East Los Angeles, CA. They are not to be confused with any of the various Premiers groups on the following labels: Dig, Big Top, Dore, Fury, Rust, Gone, RCA Victor, Mink or Parkway. Nor are they associated with any like named groups.

The Premiers were formed in 1962 in San Gabriel, CA, by the Perez Brothers, Lawrence (Guitar, Vocals) and John (Drums). They were joined by George Delgado (Guitar, Vocals) and Frank Zuniga (Bass). It was customary for the band to practice in the Perez bros. back yard which began to draw crowds. The mother of the Perez bros. became the de facto manager and the group got gigs playing weddings and parties. Eventually, their local popularity became such that their mother/Manager became overwhelmed and got in touch with local group manager, Bill Cardenas. Cardenas managed and promoted a number of East L.A. groups, among them, The Blendells (who had a #62 hit in 1964 with "La La La La La"), The Romancers (who are best known for the single, " The Slauson Shuffle and an LP on the Del-Fi label and one on subsidiary label, Selma), The Atlantics (best remembered for the song, "Beaver shot") and others. Cardenas managed to get them some better gigs at local dance clubs and such. He also introduced them to producer/Faro label owner, Eddie Davis, who signed the group.

Faro 615
Farmer John/Duffy's Blues; 1964
The Premiers
(Eddie Davis brought the group into Stereo Masters Studios in Hollywood, CA to record. " Farmer John" had been previously recorded with a much different arrangement of the song by Don And Dewey in 1959. The Premiers version was recorded as if it were played live in a club, but was in fact recorded in the studio using both canned "party noise" and live in the studio voices provided by the members of an all female car club (known as, The Chevelles) and a few friends. The record did very well locally in Southern CA. and so, a deal was struck with the Warner Bros. label for national distribution (as Warner Bros. 5443; 1964. "Farmer John" eventually rose to #19 on the billboard pop charts. The popularity of the song, caused Warner Bros. to get the group to record enough songs to fill out an album (Farmer John Live, Warner Bros. 1565; 1964). The Premiers also appeared on American Bandstand and were able to tour the US. behind the hit single)

Warner Bros. 5464
Blues For Arlene/Annie Oakley; 1964
The Premiers

Warner Bros. 5488
Little Irene/So Fine; 1965
The Premiers
(This & the previous release on Warner Bros. made little impact and The Premiers found themselves back on the Faro label.

Faro 616
Get Your Baby/Little Ways; 1965
The Premiers

Faro 624
Get On This Plane/Come On And Dream; 1966
The Premiers
(This single is more on the Psychedelic side than the "garage rock" of previous singles and so is fairly sought after by collectors of the genre)

Faro 627
Ring Around My Rosie/Ring Around My Rosie; 1967
The Premiers
(The "A" side is a vocal version, the "B" side is an instrumental. This is the last release for The Premiers. Two group members were drafted into the US Military. The group broke up due to this event.
The Premiers did reunite on occasion in the 1990s and 2000s for various gigs.

If you want to hear some this group's music, there are a fair number of these singles on YouTube. Just stick with the songs/labels that are outlined above and you'll have the right "Premiers" group.
