Band: The Wild Ones
Album: Dream On
Released: August 2013

IMG_0351In the way that many book lovers have a list of their favorite opening lines, I think I might create my own list of favorite album openings, and the Wild Ones’ Dream On is going to be pretty close to the top. This surf-rock, doo-wop, girl group’s debut album opens with the titular track and a rolling drum beat not unlike that of the Surfaris’s “Wipe Out.” Then comes rhythm guitar, then lead guitar and bass, and finally vocals, backed with a whole lot of “sha-wa-wa-oooo”s. It’s a blast.

IMG_0354The whole album is a cohesive “genre piece,” as it were, with all tracks revolving around the retro girl group theme. In the introduction letter, the Wild Ones’s drummer, Marisa Kurt, recalls, “The most flattering thing someone’s said [about our sound] is ‘the Ramones meets the Shangri-las.'” Feedbands calls them “rockabilly in the female form.” Both descriptions are on-point. The Wild Ones, with their “wah-oo”s and “yeah yeah”s could perhaps come across as too sweet, but their fast tempos, electric guitar riffs, and their lyrics about day drinking and partying in Tijauna outweigh the few more “traditional” songs about lost love and firmly declare that these ladies deserve their name: they are indeed wild ones.

The retro flair makes this album perfect for vinyl. The only downside is that the sound is a bit tinny, a fact which is only amplified on vinyl. But that’s a small price to pay. The bright “Candy Apple Red” record is a jolt of color, much like the music it holds. Also, as it feels a bit heavier, I think this might have been the point at which Feedbands opted for 180g vinyl, which many fans are sure to appreciate.
